About This Project
A promissory note in which A.J. Tenant agreed to rent the enslaved woman Louisa for $70 for the year 1864 from John H. Wills. 1 page, 8" x 3", dated December 22, 1863. The document reads: "I promise to pay John H. Wills or bearer the sum of seventy dollars for the hire of a negro woman (Louisa). Jan 1st 1865. A J Tenant. Dec 22nd 1863." On the verso: "Recd of Geo. M. [Ha?] Seventy Dollars and Ninety Cents on the within note Feb 9th 1865. M. A. Wills." The $70.90 payment recorded on February 9, 1865 — after emancipation — suggests either John H. Wills or Tenant had died. Condition: expected folds; very good.
