About This Project
An alphabetical index of insurance applicants L through Z for the Nautilus Insurance Company (predecessor of New York Life Insurance Company), covering the full life of the company from ca. 1845 through April 1, 1888. Each entry lists the applicant's name, loss number, policy number, date of death, amount paid, year of issue, and age of insured. This index is a critical finding aid for locating enslaved persons and enslavers in the accompanying policy registers and death claim books. Applicants include both free and enslaved persons.
